Yesterday was a fun day for me. I went to a secretary day held by The Microsoft. The invitation was send to the IT manager and he passed on to my boss. He thought this will be an opportunity for me to have some fun, and he would be happy for me to take the day to attend. I said why not!! It’s free of charge anyway and in the same time my boss is on sites trip so nothing to worry about leaving works.
The event took place in Blitz Megaplex, Pacific Place a new mall in Jakarta (SCBD Complex). It was a perfect time for me to do the survey on how nice the velvet room with sofa bed is since my boss will give away some vouchers for staff who has ‘great work’ (this is only one of his 3 reward programs) and he asked me to see the place to make sure it is good.
Anyway, the secretary day is once a year appreciation event from Microsoft. (Hmmm… a good way to entertain their customer.) It was a light event, followed by lunch and movie. They gave us a short demo on how to use windows 07 and vista. Some of our managers are using vista in office and myself now familiar with windows 07, so easy with open tools and ribbons makes us work productively. There was also a presentation about protect children on internet pornography (you can use windows vista home edition for this) and information about cervical cancer which is very useful for woman. Ladies, be careful of kanker mulut rahim, you and your daughter need to get a HPV (Human papilomavirus) vaccination (harganya diatas 1 juta bow!!), If you get infected It will be like a ‘kutil’ spread over your vagina. Hiiiyyy serem deh ngeliat fotonya, bisa ditularin dari para lelaki juga loh, so do the Pap smear once a year for you who is sexually active.
Back to the topic, for the early birds, they also checked our bone mass density to protect against osteoporosis. I had a good result: negative 0,1 which is normal. The event ended by watching movie together - ’27 Dresses’, for free, YAY! served with hot dog, fries and green tea *yummy*. A romantic comedy movie is always been my favorite. Wasn’t that good, watching movie in the middle of the day while everybody busy working in the office, how lucky I was. LOL. I enjoyed every minutes of the time I spent on the event and have a chance meeting all executive secretaries in different companies. Hahah! Para sere kalo udah terlalu senior tuh gitu ya, wong pembicaranya pake bahasa indo tapi nanyanya kok pake English. Halaaaaah…di kantor aja gue dah pegel tiap hari ber English-ria, maleeessss deeeeh! Ah tapi napa juga hari ini mereka jadi meng-inspire gue untuk nulis pake English yak!
.The only bad thing is I forgot to bring my business cards and lost my chance to get a door prize or barter it with new friends. I also regretted for not being forwarded the invitation to my colleagues at office. I think it’s ok to share, I saw more than 1 secretary attended from same company. I felt ‘cengo’ there alone, while everybody have companion. The movie finished at 2pm and I went home straight away. My breast is ‘pegel-pegel’ so full with milk; it was like a mountain going to erupt. Hehehe. Need to get it pumped; I didn’t have time to do it in the middle of the show.
Speaking about secretary, I have been in this position for almost 7 years now. Some of you might think being a secretary is nothing and an easy job. Well, maybe you are right, but most of you are wrong. A Secretary’s role can expect to be more of an organizer, supervisor and trainer rather than the bulk of the duties being typing. You need to know how to deal with certain issues should the occasion arise near you. The role is so varied, diverse and demanding. You are expected to be innovative, active, smart, skillful, having a highs sense of urgency and trustworthy. As my duties before we move to a new building, I also doubled as a semi-office manager for our floor with 3 staffs under me. I dealt with all office needs from kitchen and stationary stock to a driver arrangement. With my new boss here, he treats me more to be a Personal Assistant (PA) rather than just a secretary (hmmm…you need to increase my salary pak!). Even though it is difficult, I try to be discreet especially when it comes to a secret records and private matters as its origin word ‘secret’ (from secretary) is a person who is entrusted for confidential things. Duuuh…tapi kalo udah soal tau gaji orang bikin jealous aja deh. Hiks!
I love my job and never thought of changing position in the near future. Not that I am incapable for other title but I find this role is interesting, challenging and undergoing many changes. I am not into a carrier woman even though I hold a bachelor degree. Hey, what more can you expect beside having a nice office, conducive environment, kind-hearted bosses and good salary (how big it is will never enough anyway, but I can beat my husband’s this year. You need to work harder darling! or jump into other company :D).
When I first started my day (2005) in the company I am currently working with, I found it so different with the pervious one; from a government company to a foreign company, from a conservative to a sophisticated, oh wow! . Luckily I am adaptable and a fast learner so it was easy for me to bond. I also have to assist more than 4 expatriate managers (at that time 4, last year 6 and now back to 4) and they have different accents even though come from same country. They speak so fast, sometime using slang words made me almost couldn’t hear clearly what they were saying, and in the opposite my English was so ‘bule-potan’ (of course I am Indonesian, remember?). Hahah! Well, not that terrible I was just being hyperbolic; it was happen only for 2 weeks. Now it’s been almost 3 years, I become more and more fluent, can catch my boss intention before he finishes his words. But still sometime embarrassing moment happens. When my boss left me for hours and back to catch up some works he asked me: “so, how is your travelling, Rosa?” With a bit confuse on my face, I answered: “travelling? I didn’t go anywhere, just staying in office”. Then he was laughing and explained to me what he meant is how is your job/day, how is your journey or some kind like that in another word. Hahah…maklum yang gue tau kan cuma common words aja. Saking taunya cuma common word, my pen pal in Florida ever said to me that I speak very good English than American. Hihih…gue kudu belajar lebih banyak soal casual words nih.
Alright, I better stop here, before my sentences starting ‘bule-potan’ again. hahah!

Hi Cha, pa kabar nih? It was nice reading this entry, I get to know you a lot more Cha. I believe that you’re one of the high qualified secretaries out there Cha.
PS. Mau nonton 27 dresses deh…
